  Find-a-Grave Fernando G. "Fred" Soares, 64, of New Bedford died after a long illness November 10, 2005 at Morton Hospital. He was the widower of Betty Jean (Haskell) Soares. Mr. Soares was born in St. Michael, Azores, Portugal, son of Sophie (Botelho) Soares of Fairhaven and the late John G. Soares. He resided most of his life in Fairhaven, living for 10 years in Florida and returning to New Bedford in 2004. Mr. Soares served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a fish cutter in various local fish houses for many years and later became the Business Agent for the Seafood Worker's Union in New Bedford. He enjoyed carpentry and hunting. In addition to his mother he is survived by a daughter: Joanne J. Rezendes of Taunton; two sons: Anthony R. Soares of Port St. Lucie, FL and Fernando G. Soares, Jr. of Jensen Beach, FL; two sisters: Margaret Soares and Rosie Houghton both of Fairhaven; four brothers: Bert Soares of Fairhaven, John Soares of New Bedford, Daniel Soares of Fairhaven and Michael Soares of Freetown; five grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews.
