  Find-a-Grave Bertha Maude Haskell Daughter of Ernest Courtney Haskell and Angie L. Staples who were from Maine. Ernest was a crew member in the America Cup races of 1895 and 1899 which defeated the English both times. Bertha moved with her parents and siblings from Deer Isle, Maine to Everett, MA in 1910. Bertha graduated from Everett High School, and became a lifelong resident of Everett. She was employed for many years for the Boston Varnish Co. as a bookkeeper. At the age of 40, Bertha married Captain Winsor William Torrey (1890-1958) in Everett, MA on August 26, 1942. The couple had met in Boston. Captain Torrey had been residing in Everett, but originally came fom Deer Isle, ME. The marriage is registered in both Everett and Deer Isle. Bertha had one daughter, Ruth Evelyn, born in 1944. Sometime after her marriage and child rearing, Bertha became employed as a bookkeeper at Boston Mutual Life. She passed away in 1976 from a massive stroke according to her daughter.
