James E. Edwards, Sr., 79, of Binghamton, passed away May 4, 2008 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
He was born July 11, 1928 in Glenburn, PA to Wayne E. and Frances Fitch Edwards, both of whom predeceased him along with his wife, Beverly Haskell Edwards; his brother, Wayne F. Edwards; and his sister, Shirley Henneman.
He is survived by four children and their families: James Jr., Derek, James III (JJ) and Ericia Edwards (Endwell, N.Y.); Penny and Kevin, Ryan, Craig, and Christopher Maddy (Southwick, Mass.); Sandy Alter-Ballard and Chris Ballard, Megan and Sean Alter, and Wendy Ballard (Binghamton, N.Y.); and David and Mary, Calista Edwards (Wichita, Kans.). He is also survived by sisters, Gloria Murphy (Maine, N.Y.), Dorothy and Ken Young (Bath, Maine); sisters-in-law, Helen Homa (Newark Valley, N.Y.) and Geri Edwards (Columbia, S.C.); several nieces, nephews; and a dear friend and companion, Gladys Wells (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.).
Jim graduated from Union-Endicott High School in 1946 where he played varsity baseball, starting a lifelong passion for the game. In 1947 he attended Wyoming Seminary where he played baseball, football, and basketball. He enrolled at Lafayette College in 1948 where he studied engineering until drafted into the Army. He served as a staff sergeant in Munich Germany until discharged in 1953. Upon his return to the US, he joined his father's contracting business in Endwell, N.Y. where he would later become the president of the firm. On March 28, 1953, he married Beverly Haskell and they built their family home in Endwell. He and Beverly were partners in life for 34 years raising their family, running the family construction and carwash businesses, developing rental properties, and sharing a passion for traveling around the world. Jim was a member and past president of the Endwell Rotary Club, a founder of the Endwell Little League, a member of the National Home Builders Association, the Vestal American Legion, and the Median Shrine. Upon his retirement, Jim spent his winters in Ft. Lauderdale and his summers in Binghamton. He enjoyed watching sporting events including his grandchildren in their various activities. Jim's second passion was the hours he spent riding his tractor.
