John Major Lamoreux passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at the age of 91. He was born in Orofino on Feb. 20, 1918, to Phillip Major Lamoreux and Gladys Kauffman. He graduated from Whitman College in 1950 after serving in the South Pacific during World War II.
He had a curious mind, a keen sense of humor and a gentle manner which endeared him to many. He was the kind of person one would want to live next door to and visit often. He had a strong singing voice and everyone in the neighborhood recognized his whistle. He loved the outdoors, bird watching, fuchsias and his home on the river. He was a masterful woodcarver, specializing in beautiful birds. His interests included furniture refinishing, gardening, graphoanalysis and baseball.
John and his wife, Donna-Jean, were 30-plus-year members of the First Unitarian Church of Portland, Ore., and joined the Unitarian Universalist Church when they moved to Spokane. He worked as an accountant and office manager for several companies in Portland and Walla Walla. He retired from The Carborumdum Corp. in Vancouver, Wash., in 1985. John and Donna-Jean enjoyed traveling in their RV, taking two round-trips across the country and numerous short trips throughout the West Coast. He was an active community volunteer with SHIBA and the Pomeroy Living History Farm for many years. In 1999, John and Donna-Jean were honored as Outstanding Senior Volunteer Citizens by the Southwest Washington Agency on Aging and the Clark County Council on Aging. In the past 45 years, he lived in Lake Oswego, Ore., Yacolt, Wash., and Vancouver. They moved from Vancouver to Spokane in 2004 to be nearer to their family.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Donna-Jean of Spokane his children and spouses, Cathi and David Lipton, and Kent, both of Spokane his granddaughters, Klay Arsenault and Richard Belson of Gilroy, Calif., and Holly Arsenault and Matthew Richter of Seattle his great-grandson, Emmett Belson his brother, Steve of Bellvue, Colo. his sisters, Jean Snyder of Kamiah and Leah Harris of Dayton, Wash. and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary.
