RAYMOND B. JANNEY II, 79, of Grand Islander Health Care Center, formerly of Portsmouth, a retired chief aeronautical engineer, died Tuesday at the nursing home.
He was the husband of Nancy J. (Roberts) Janney of Portsmouth. Born in Cecil, Md., a son of the late Curtis J. and Alice M. (Haskell) Janney, he lived in the nursing home since July, previously living on Glen Farm Road and Prospect Lane, both in Portsmouth. He had also lived in Marblehead, Mass., for 20 years.
Mr. Janney was employed by the AVCOEverrett Research Laboratory in Everett, Mass., for 12 years before retiring in 1983. He was director of the Space Shuttle Reentry Experiments Operation and the Laser Development Program.
He was an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He was a graduate of Bowdoin College, and completed his master's degree at Cornell University. He was an Army veteran.
He was an avid sailor and aviator.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Barton C. Janney of Portsmouth; three daughters, Holly C. Janney of Portsmouth, Susan C. Janney in Spain and Tracey E. Byrne of Manchester, Mass.; a brother, Curtis Janney of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and five grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Ruth Hall.
