  Family notes courtesy of Richard Manley Snethen Lena Haskell was born in Amity Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania. The house she was born in was on the old Hendry farm. The family moved to a fruit farm in North East, Pennsylvania, where Lena attended a one-room school until graduation into North East High School. After graduation, she and a cousin went on a trip to the West. This included Yellowstone National Park and California. In California the girls were entertained by a friend of their grandfather Andrew Haskell, the forty-niner. Lena Snethen played the piano and sang in a number of recitals held in the Methodist Church. She was a Matron of the Eastern Star as well as being an active member throughout her life. She enjoyed "bumming in Jeroboam," her description of driving about in her Packard at first and then her subsequent automobiles. She reminisced about her girlhood on the farm and about her grandfather's service in the Civil War. When her son Richard's family went to Gettysburg, they looked for Andrew Haskells name on the Pennsylvania monument. Not finding his name there on their return home Richard told his mother of their efforts. She indignantly replied, "Naturally you couldn't find Andrew Haskell's name there; it was Grandfather Thomas Hendry who was at the battle of Gettysburg."
