It was with deep regret that I learnt of the passing on 21 March 2005, of my second cousin, IDA MARY HASKELL-BULL, aged ninety-one.
Ida, the second daughter of Rebecca Mable Haskell and John (Jack) Bull, was born on 23 September 1913 in Mill House Brastead, Kent thus making her a "Maid of Kent", a fact of which she was enormously proud.
Ida and her elder sister Josephine attended school in Sevenoaks, traveling each day by bus, until 1922. It was then that Jack Bull was advised by his doctors to sell the watermill that had been in his family for generations and move away from the damp valley to a more healthy location. Settling in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, Ida and Josephine continued their education, after which Ida attended the Guild Hall School of Music, studying singing and voice production.
At the outbreak of war in 1939 Ida went into nursery work until contact with soil caused dermatitis of the hands. Unable to continue with nursery work Ida then became a full time Air Raid Warden serving in the Bognor Regis district until the need for full time staff diminished in late 1943. With the wartime Direction of Labour still in force Ida was then offered work as either a nurse or a teacher.
With a long history of teaching in her family, from her grandmother, mother, one aunt, and two uncles, the natural progression was for Ida to become a teacher. She then attended the Bishop Otter College in Chichester, Sussex, and also a short course at Oxford before becoming a supply teacher in Bognor Regis and district. Ida then held a number of full time posts in Bognor and Littlehampton until retiring in 1973.
After retiring Ida became sacristan for her local parish church for many years and also editor of the parish magazine. She also had a long interest in wine making and had just completed her studies to become a judge of wines when an attack by a burglar at her home in 1990 robbed her of mobility. For the latter part of her life Ida lived in a retirement home in Bognor Regis.
Ida was related to Anthony Haskell of Taunton, the Rev. Stanley Haskell of Canada, Mrs. Katherine Haskell of British Columbia, Martyn Haskell of Scotland, Brian Haskell of Trinidad, Mable Haskell of Barbados, and Peter Haskell of Sussex, all of the Donhead St. Andrew
family line.
