Lieutenant Colonel Frank Paul Stewart Worthen, USA (ret), passed away at age 91 on November 3, 2010 in Jacksonville, FL. Born January 24, 1919 in Natick, MA, the second child and second son of Edwin Stewart Stirling Worthen and Marion Henrietta Brooks Worthen, he enlisted in the 115th Field Artillery Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, Tennessee/Georgia National Guard.
In September 1940 the division was mobilized due to the looming world war. In 1942 he attended OCS and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. He saw combat service in Europe during WWII and the Korean Conflict winning a Bronze Star for valor along with many other military decorations.
He was an Atomic Veteran who participated in the Atmospheric Nuclear Weapons Testing Program at the Nevada Test Site of the 10 kilo ton Kepler detonation. He retired at Fort Bliss Texas on 09-30-60.
After his military retirement he became a real estate appraiser working for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga, TN. He later became Chief Appraiser for the Memphis District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, followed by several years of private practice.
He was an Honorary Life Member of Knights of Columbus Council 616 and the Cardinal Stritch Assembly 1062, Memphis, TN; Life member of the Sons of the American Revolution; life member of the Founders and Patriots of American and life member of the Military Order of World Wars.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Mary Frances Clement Worthen, his daughters Margaret Anne Hendrickson, Las Vegas NV, Mary Grace Konopka, Pensacola, FL, and sons Paul David Worthen, Las Vegas, NV and Mark Clement Worthen, Jacksonville, FL; sister, Margaret Eleanor Castillo, Albuquerque, NM; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
