SCARBOROUGH-Mary Adella (Geer) August, 93, died on Sept.12, 2015 at Holbrook Health Center at Piper Shores in Scarborough. She was born on March 20, 1922 in Portland to Dr. George I. Geer and Jennie E. (Merrill) Geer, as the seventh of eight children.
She attended schools in Westbrook, graduated from Deering High School in 1940, and graduated from Northeast Business School in Portland. She then worked as a teller at a Portland bank.
She married Kastic C. August, a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy, on June 1, 1946 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Portland.
They moved to Boston where her husband graduated from Harvard Business School, and where their first child was born. K.C.'s work took them next to Chicago, where two more children were born. They moved in 1959 to the suburb of Park Ridge, Ill. In the early 1980s they bought a cottage at Higgins Beach in Scarborough, where they had often spent summer vacations, coming back to visit Mary's large family. In 1989 Mary and K.C. moved to a condo in Prospect Heights, Ill.
At the time of K.C.'s death on Feb. 25, 1996, Mary was a resident of Scarborough, living at Higgins Beach. In October 2001, she became a resident of Piper Shores Retirement Community, living there until her death. Mary was a homemaker, and a beloved daughter, mother, wife, sister and grandmother. She was active in Manor Community Church in Marionette Manor in Chicago, and at the Park Ridge Community Church. She participated in her children's schools and scouting endeavors. She was a fabulous hostess, always ready to entertain neighbors, family, friends and guests. She served as an AFS mother to a Dutch high school student. She enjoyed bridge, reading, and traveling widely with her husband. She was grateful for her good health and her fulfilling family life.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, and all seven of her siblings.
She is survived by her son, John Geer August of Princeton, NJ, her daughter Virginia M. August and her husband Dr. Brian Zack, also of Princeton, her daughter Susan L. August-Brown and her husband Mark Brown of Scarborough; her grandchildren, Rebecca Callahan, Ian Zack, Daniel Zack and Lily August-Brown; and three great-grandchildren.
