Philip Haskell passed away peacefully at home, with his loving family by his side, on May 27, 2006.
Phil was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Philip and Mary Haskell. Phil joined the U.S. Navy in the spring of 1944 and was trained as a Radio Operator. After serving for 2 years, he returned to Milwaukee where he met his one true love, Stephanie Consolazione. In 1948, he came to Bakersfield along with his bride, his parents and siblings. On April 1, 1949, Phil and his dad opened Haskell's Displays. The display business evolved into Haskell's Cabinets & Costumes, both longtime Bakersgfield business institutions that served our community well. His master craftsmanship can be seen in many local buildings, including the Hall of Records and CSUB library.
Phil was a man true to his Catholic faith. He was an active parishioner of St. Francis Church as an usher, a member of the church choir, and the Marion singers. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 977. Phil was an avid puzzle solver; there was never a brainteaser that was too tough for him to solve. He loved his Renegade Football, as he and Stevie were season ticket holders for over 50 years. "Three yards and a cloud of dust" will forever be his favorite play. Phil was involved in many other activities throughout his life, which opened up a broad base of friendships that he cherished deeply.
Phil was the consummate "Family Man". He enjoyed the life he had with Stevie, his "Sweetie Face", and their six children. He was a good provider, especially with the giving of his unconditional love. As the family grew, he was especially proud to be called "Grandpa" and "Papa" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the pillar of the family and has laid a lasting foundation of love and respect. We will miss him, but his love will carry us through the days and years ahead. It is comforting to us all knowing that he is with his Lord and Savior.
He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Stephanie; daughters, Carolyn and husband, Jeff Hunter, Nicki and husband, Frank Lovejoy; sons, Steven and wife, Brenda, John and Tara, Robert and wife, Robin, Tom and wife, Liz; granddaughters, Michele and husband, Lee Ramos, Jennifer Lovejoy and fiancé, Matt Kelley, Ashley Haskell, Lindsey Haskell, Anna Haskell; grandsons, Patrick and wife, Amy Hoffman, Eric Lovejoy, Zachary Haskell, Nick Haskell, Zachary Glover; great-granddaughters, Kaylee, Gina, Maura, Alyssa, Abigail, Juliana, Mia; sisters, Mary Dale and husband, Ray Haas, Carol and husband, Keith Kincheloe; brother, Dick and wife, Pebble Haskell; and numerous special nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Mary Haskell; brother-in-law, Lewis Howlett; and nephew, Charles Howlett.
