Joseph W. Sliwa, 57, passed away peacefully on October 31st following a long battle with Cancer.
He is survived by his father Clem (Rita) Sliwa, brothers Tom and Mike (Cheri) Sliwa, sister Sue (Tom) Miskovich; and step siblings Stan (Cyndi) Marriott, Duncan (Peggy) Marriott, Roseanne (Will) Alamillo, John (Chris) Antanaitis.
Joe was preceded in death by his mother Shirley (nee Brabbs) Sliwa.
Joe grew up in Hessville, attended O.L.P.H. grade school and Morton High School, where he lettered 4 years as a swimmer - winning a Conference Championship and setting school records. Joe earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering Technology from Purdue Calumet. He worked at Inland Steel in Research, then at Connors Industrials as a Project Engineer & Level III Thermographer. The infrared camera systems that Joe helped develop and install are operating in Steel Making facilities throughout the world.
Joe made friends wherever he went. He filled our lives with his gift of gab, genuine kindness, stories of his travels, and endless supply of bits of trivia and fun facts. His passion was fishing - anywhere and everywhere there was water.
Joe lived life Xtra Large and loved celebrating with family, friends and food! He cherished the memories of traditional family Holiday gatherings (especially Christmas Eve with Polish food), his childhood playing in the woods, growing up at O.L.P.H., being on the swim team, Inland Ski Club trips, his "at work" family, fishing excursions, and his numerous national and international travel adventures.
