Lakeland, Fla.—Ruth Graves Peirce, 98, died July 29, 2009. She was born in Berlin, N.H. on April 17, 1911, one of 12 children of Wallace and Annie Graves.
She attended Normal School in Berlin, N.H. and received her teaching certification from Keene Teachers College in Keene, N.H., where she later received her bachelor’s degree.
On February 16, 1935, she married Beland Peirce of Winchester, N.H., where she taught elementary school. She moved to Peterborough, N.H. in 1935 and taught school in the Peterborough school system. She was a member of the Peterborough Congregational Church and sang in the choir.
She and her husband moved to Lake Skatutakee in Harrisville, N.H. in 1983. They had a seasonal residence in Bradenton, Fla. and in 1986 moved to The Estates at Carpenters in Lakeland, Fla. Her husband died May 28, 2007.
While living in Lakeland, she was active for many years in The Estate’s Flea Market program that raised money for scholarships for students working at The Estates. She also collected donated clothing for members of The Ridge, a religious commune in Fitzgerald, Ga. She enjoyed coin collecting, furniture refinishing, crafts and handiwork and made several large multicolored braided rugs which are now family heirlooms.
Survivors include two sons, John Peirce of Fitzgerald, Ga., and David Peirce of Randolph, two grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
