Mark Randall Hammericksen was born Dec. 22, 1946, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Mark Edward and Helen June Hammericksen.
He died Thursday (May 18, 2000) at Providence Medford Medical Center.
The family moved to Albany when he was in the second grade. He attended Albany public schools and was graduated from Albany Union High School in 1965. He attended Contra Costa College in San Pablo, Calif., before transferring to Oregon State University in Corvallis, where he graduated.
On April 3, 1970, in Corvallis, he married Beth Mary Vandehey, who survives.
He was sports editor at the Mail Tribune from August 1987 until the fall of 1996, when he became the primary sports columnist. He worked at the Oceanside, Calif., Blade-Tribune, Corvallis Gazette-Times and Eureka Times-Standard before coming to Medford.
For more than 20 years he coached basketball for YMCA Y-ball and AAU teams. He enjoyed spending time with his family and with his dogs. He also enjoyed sports, especially golf and basketball.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include five daughters, Denice Hammericksen Roe, Santa Barbara, Calif., and Rani Hammericksen, Melanie Hammericksen, Melissa Hammericksen and Keri Hammericksen, all of Medford; three sons, Jamie, Klamath Falls, and Corey and Aaron, both of Medford.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Cheryl Iverson.
