Marjorie Joan Russell of Pacifica, California, passed away on August 11, 2017. She was born on July 27, 1927, the youngest child of 7 children, to Linwood Elmer Sawyer and Grace (Merrill) Sawyer. She was born in Portland, Cumberland, Maine.
Marjorie graduated from the Portland public schools and became employed by Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Portland. With a keen interestin music, she went to New York City where she studied voice and sang in the Riverside Memorial Church.
Marjorie had a dear friend who was killed in WWII and felt a need to do something for her country so she joined the United States Marine Corps and went to Paris Island for basic training. It is there that she met a young Marine from Tennessee and she and John Russell were married on August 13, 1952.
Honorably discharged, she and John settled in Hayward, California, later moving to Pacifica, California. Marge and John encouraged members of their families to seek higher education and were willing to help them reach their goals. She continued to work for the US Government including the US Passport Office in San Francisco, while living in Pacifica. It is there that she received her Masters degree in English Literature.
Marjorie continued her interest in music- from opera to jazz- as well as a special interest in animals of all kinds, supporting many groups.
Marjorie is preceded in death by her husband John, who passed away November 12, 2012.
She is survived by nieces Judy Danis of Westbrook, Me., Barbara Johnson of Bountiful, Utah, and Lois Mott of Iron Station, N.C.. Nephews David Sawyer of South Portland, Me., Lawrence Nickerson of Portland, Me., Stephen Sawyer of Buxton, Me., and Richard Howe of Orem, Utah, as well as nieces Sandra Peterson of Pacifica, CA, Cheryl Peterson of Jamestown, CA and nephews William Russell of Etna CA, Robert Russell of Danville, VA and Terry Peterson of Modesto CA on her dear husband John's side.
