Esther E. Anderson, of Brockton, died July 8, 2011. Born in Bethel, Maine, she was a daughter of the late Alvah R. and Jennie B. (West) Cummings.
In 1925, her family relocated to Abington, where she attended local schools and graduated in 1938 from Abington High School. In November 1940, she married the late Chester Anderson of Brockton, and moved to Brockton, where she resided for over 70 years. Over the years, Esther worked as a bookkeeper for the former Kemp Transportation Company of West Bridgewater, retail clerk for Top Value Stamps in both Brockton and Rockland, and lastly, as a letter carrier in the West Bridgewater Post Office, from which she retired in December 1982, after over 11 years of service to the U.S. Postal Service. She enjoyed reading, Scrabble, card games, puzzles, stamp collecting, fishing and poetry. In the mid 1950s, she wrote under the name of Crandy as a contributor of poems relating to family life to the Cousin Mary page of the Brockton Enterprise. Of most importance to Esther was her family, and she remarked in later life that having six married children meant that she now had 12 friends.
She was the mother of Sally Corcoran of Hebron, Maine, Judith Fuller of Plympton, Richard Anderson of Williamstown, Linda Bartol of West Bridgewater, Chester R. Anderson of Halifax and Laurie Monahan of Brockton. She was grandmother to 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was also the sister of the late Randall, Charles and Harold Cummings, Jennie Hanby, Mary Rowell, Jessie Kelley and Elsie Tetrault; and sister-in-law to Mardita Cummings of West Bridgewater and Bob Hanby of Whitman.
