John Leichtman was born January 24, 1929 on the family farm in Minnehaha County. He grew up in the area where he attended country school. He attended high school in Lyons, SD. John farmed on the family farm for many years. He then became employed in construction with Henry Carlson Co., where he was involved with many projects, including construction on the Interstate Highway, work on the airport terminal and runways, construction on dormitories at Augustana College, and work on the telephone company building in downtown Sioux Falls. He later worked at McKennan Hospital for 18 years, until his retirement in 1992.
He was united in marriage with Joyce McCloud on February 28, 1954 in Sioux Falls. He lived on the family farm his entire life before moving to Crooks, SD a short time ago.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Joyce, of Crooks, SD; his children, Diane Fillipi and her husband, Mike, and their children, Alissa and Benjamin, of Mulvane, KS, Joanne Davis and her children, Casey and Amanda, of Arvada, CO, Lois Elcock and her husband, Doug, and their children, Sara and Ryan, of Highlands, Ranch, CO, Janet Shipley and her husband, Kirk, and their children, Emma and Garrett, of Urbandale, IA, John K. Leichtman and his wife, Marci, and their children, Phillip and Alexander, of Sioux Falls, SD, and Barbara Johnson and her husband, Kyle, and their children, Keri and Kayla, of Sioux Falls, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Charles J. "Chuckie"; and one sister, Lucille Voelker.
