Mary Louise (Mann) Jennings, of Fort Pierre, passed away April 30, 2013, at Avera Maryhouse in Pierre.
Mary was born Jan. 27, 1917, in the "old" Pierre Hospital to Walter and Emma (Ihli) Mann. She married Darrell Jennings on Oct. 9, 1937, and they lived on the ranch south of Fort Pierre where they raised their six children. Mary was involved with the Promising Buds 4-H Club for many years and was inducted into the South Dakota 4-H Hall of Fame in 2002. She was a 50 year member of the Fort Pierre Chapter of Eastern Star, holding several offices in that organization. In 1959 she officially became a member of the Fort Pierre Congregational Church. Mary worked in the Stanley County School Food Services program for 16 years. She was a member of the Gumbo Gals extension club and was often a judge at 4-H Achievement Days.
One of the greatest joys of her life was attending her grandchildren's sporting events and, later, watching her great-grandchildren's activities.
Mary was a wizard with the sewing machine and created and sewed clothes for herself and her daughters. She always had requests for her potato salad and looked forward to family gatherings.
Mary is survived by her children: Lois Finn of Houston, Texas, Darrell (Nanci) Jennings of Rapid City, Norma Theilen of Brainerd, Minn., Keith (Patti) Jennings of Fort Pierre and Bob Jennings of Fort Pierre; and sister-in-law Bev Jennings of Pierre. Grateful for having shared their grandma's life are her 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell Sr.; daughter Marilyn; her siblings, Jim, Al, Eileen, Gertrude, Alma and Julia; her parents Walter and Emma Mann; brother-in-law Ken Jennings; sister-inlaw Dorothy Fox and her husband John, and grandsons, Dean and Kelly Jennings.
Mary was an amazing, strong and loving woman who was able to remain in her home past her 96th birthday.
