Betty Lou (Hare) Suhr, 87, of Bozeman passed away peacefully in her sleep with a smile on her face on Sunday, January 8, 2017, from complications due to Alzheimer's.
Betty Lou was born September 6, 1929 in Three Forks to Luther Fletcher "Fletch" Hare, Jr. and Alice (Rutledge) Hare. She attended schools in Willow Creek, Three Forks, and Helena, and lived in Portland, Oregon during World War II before returning to Bozeman for high school. On August 24, 1946 Betty Lou married Francis Everett "Sonny" Suhr. They had three daughters, Trudy, Terry, and Toni.
She worked at Bon Ton Bakery in Bozeman as a teenager, and then became co-owner of Suhr's Hauling, later working at the Gallatin County Treasurer's Office. Betty Lou was highly involved in her community. She was the first President and founder of Gallatin County Humane Society and was one of the founding members of Bozeman Saddleites, the ladies' equestrian drill team. She was also a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star – Lily of the Valley #4, a board member of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls and the Grand Cross of Colors, a member of Daughter of the Nile, and was past-treasurer of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also active in Solid Waste Contractors of Montana, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Montana Republican Women, and was a Girl Scout and Brownie leader.
Betty Lou was an avid horsewoman and as a child loved to ride along "the bench" in Willow Creek, riding horses for as long into adulthood as she could. In addition to loving all animals, she also enjoyed the outdoors, particularly fishing, camping, gardening, and rock collecting. She also did cross-stitch embroidery, latch hooking, and bowled for fun. She loved to laugh, sing, and dance.
Her parents; her husband, Sonny; and her sons-in-law, Barry Frost and John David Brence, preceded in her death. Survivors include her daughters, Trudy Jo Brence (Ted Cline), Terry Lynn (Samuel) Bolton, and Toni Lee Frost; grandchildren, George Edward (Andrea) Beck, Sunny Rae (Jim) Yocom, and Becki Frost; and five great-grandchildren, with one great-great-grandchild on the way.
