Mr Francis L Empey, 63, a former resident of Falmouth, died unexpectedly Thursday in San Juan.
Mr. Empey was a resident of Falmouth for 25 years and the owner of Hydro Dredge Corp. and Hundred Fathoms Corp. He had been living and working out of New Orleans, La., most recently associated with L.T.I. of Norwalk, Conn.
Among his many achievements, he and his Hydro Dredge Corp. rebuilt the Great Point lighthouse on Nantucket in the mid-1980s after the original lighthouse, built in 1918, toppled into the sea.
Surviving are four children, LeNan C. Reiser of Grandview Heights, Ohio, Michael R. Empey of New Orleans, and Aimee L. Empey and Eric H. Empey, both of Boston; three brothers, James Empey of Victor, N.Y., Malcolm Empey of Virginia and Miles Empey of New Hampshire; three sisters, Barbara Pratt of Marstons Mills, Betty Jean Kennedy of Plano, Texas, and Karen Hannigan of Martha's Vineyard; his stepfather, Warren Johnson; his close friend, Chrissy Nizolek; 11 nieces; seven nephews; several grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins; and his former wife, Marilyn Empey.
