Knoxvill, Iowa - Ellen Cooper was born on Oct. 30, 1920 in Clarinda, Iowa, the daughter of Elza George Bell and Lila (McMullin) Bell. She was raised and attended school in rural Clarinda. On Jan. 15, 1942 she was united in marriage to Birger Brown. The couple made their home on a farm near Villisca. Ellen worked in a local restaurant for several years before receiving a dietician certificate from Ames. She then worked for the Good Samaritan Center in Villisca for 11 years prior to retirement. Birger passed away in 1970 and in 1981 Ellen was married to Ward Cooper. They lived in the Morton Mills area. Following Ward's death in 1985 she made Knoxville her home. Ellen enjoyed gardening, flowers, needlework and hand quilting. Ellen was a member of New Covenant Church in Knoxville. She passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at the Griffin Nursing Center at the age of 84 years, 4 months, and 10 days.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, two infant sons and her brother, Franklin Bell.
Those left to honor her memory include her son, Norm Brown (Suzanne) of Knoxville, Iowa; daughter, Phyllis Donat (Duane) of Aberdeen; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Shepard of Clarinda; stepdaughter, Madelyn Bergen of Gilbert, Ariz., four step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
