Helen Noyes Hyde, 77, of Pownal died Friday at Mercy Hospital in Portland.
Born in Titusville, Pa., daughter of Haskell and Helen Emerson Noyes, she attended Downer Seminary in Milwaukee, the Master's School in Dobb's Ferry, N.Y., and Bradford Junior College in Boston.
In 1941, she married David Allerton Hyde of Naugatuck, Conn., and lived there for many years. Mr. Hyde died in 1976.
In 1983, Mrs. Hyde moved here. She was active in many volunteer and civic organizations, including Junior League, Colonial Dames, the Waterbury Hospital Volunteers, Freeport Community Services and the Audubon Society. She was the first vestrywoman at St. John's Episcopal Church in Waterbury, Conn. Mrs. Hyde was an amateur archaeologist and participated in many digs in the Shepaug River Valley. She also spent many years on the Brule River in Wisconsin, and enjoyed canoe paddling and poling. Mrs. Hyde was also a sports fan.
Surviving are three daughters, Lucie Emerson Hyde Tingley of Yarmouth and Helen Benson Hyde Calnan and Candace Noyes Hyde, both of Pownal; two sons, David Allerton Hyde Jr. and Stephen Webster Hyde, both of Pownal; and 10 grandchildren.
