  Brattleboro Reformer (VT) April 11, 2002 LONDONDERRY -- Lawrence G. "Stub" Rowley, 87, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Londonderry on Oct. 8, 1914, the son of George A. Rowley and Louella (Burt) Rowley, and lived there his whole life. He attended local schools in Londonderry and graduated from Chester High School in 1932. After graduation, he attended Albany Business College and graduated in 1934. He was employed at the local branch of the Brattleboro Trust Co. until it closed. He then was transferred to the main office in Brattleboro where he worked until 1941. He left the banking business to work with his father in Rowley's Express Trucking Co. in Londonderry. After his father's death, he ran Rowley's Express until it dissolved in 1977. He also owned an insurance agency in Londonderry and did tax preparation for many local townspeople. Mr. Rowley was the secretary/treasurer of the Vermont branch of National Star Route Mail Carriers Association and belonged to the Wantastiquet Rotary Club. He was a member of the West River Anchor Masonic Lodge and other Masonic orders including the Cairo Temple Shrine in Rutland. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon Chapter Order of The Eastern Star in Jamaica. He was involved for many years in the Vermont Truck and Bus Company Association. He served on the credit committee of the Londonderry Credit Union and was a town auditor. He also served for several years as deputy sheriff and was a member and trustee of the Second Congregational Church of Londonderry. He was a member, as well as the secretary and treasurer, of the Phoenix Fire Co. for many years. This was his greatest passion. Mr. Rowley loved his cat and smoking his pipe peacefully while in his office. He is survived by cousins, Casey Rowley of Londonderry and Jean Roberts of Wells; various nieces and nephews; and a longtime friend, Doris Merrow. He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Johnson) Rowley whom he married on Dec. 27, 1953, on Feb. 6, 2002.
