NEW LONDON -- Mona D. Rowell, 89, of Lyon Brook, died unexpectedly March 31, 2005.
Mrs. Rowell was born July 1, 1915, in Billerica, Mass., the daughter of Frank Leslie and Elizabeth Barker Davison. She graduated from Billerica High School in 1932 and Lowell Teachers College (now UMass Lowell) in 1936 as an art and music major. For a number of years, she taught art and music in Lancaster.
In 1939, she married Edwin Walker Rowell, a superintendent of schools throughout Massachusetts, and with him and their family was active in Lancaster, Baldwinville, Whitman and Pepperell, Mass.
Mrs. Rowell was an artist who for more than 50 years was involved in early American decoration. She was a trustee, president and curator of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration, and was instrumental in establishing the organization's museum.
She summered for many years with her husband, children, and family members at a family cottage on Lake Sunapee before moving to New London.
She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Edwin.
Family members include three children, Elizabeth M. "Betty" Hill of Duxbury, Mass., Frank D. Rowell of Sandwich and Martha L. Roth of Sunapee; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Rowell worked researching the history of the craft for many years for various institutes including Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts; she appeared several times on NHPTV's show "Antiques and Americana" with George Michaels. She also published articles about Early American Decoration for antique magazines and lectured for art organizations. She sold her own work through her studio and the League of NH Craftsmen Fair at Mount Sunapee for years.
Her love of art extended beyond her decoration to a love of bellows restoration, reverse glass painting, crewel, embroidery, weaving and knowledge of antiques.
She was also predeceased by a brother, Clyde Davison.
