  San Jose Mercury November 7, 1899 William P. Haskell, the fireman who was killed by the overturning of his engine as stated in our dispatches yesterday, was raised in San Jose. His father Dan N. Haskell was elected Chief of Police here in 1878 and served four years. Mr. and Mrs. Haskell had their first great bereavement in this city in the death of their only daughter, and now their son and only remaining child has been taken from them in a shocking manner. After leaving San Jose, Mr. Haskell earned an enviable reputation for efficiency as a messenger for Wells Fargo and Company. While engaged in this service he was recalled to San Jose and served as Under Sheriff during the term of Sheriff McDougall. The accident which killed Haskell occurred Sunday night at midnight near Redding. His fireman, George Dodge, was painfully but not fatally injured. Sunday was the thirtieth, anniversary of his birth, and just before starting on the fatal trip he received some pleasant remembrances of the day from his parents. The funeral was held at Redding today, where Mr. and Mrs. Haskell now reside. Deceased was not married. _____ San Jose Herald November 6, 1899 Wm P. Haskell, an engineer on the Iron Mountain Railway, met with death in a terrible manner near midnight Sunday. His engine and four cars jumped the track and rolled down the grade. Haskell was caught in the wreck and his body was cut into four parts and crushed beyond recognition. His fireman, George Dodge, was painfully although not seriously injured. At the time of the accident Haskell was backing the four cars into a switch just above Keswich. The conductor and brakeman got off the train to attend the switch. When near the side track, from some unknown cause the engine jumped the track. The four cars followed piling on top of the engine at the foot of the grade. The unfortunate engineer must have been instantly killed. He was unmarried. Sunday was the thirtieth anniversary of his birth, and just before starting on the fatal trip he received some pleasant remembrances of the day from his parents. The funeral has been set for Tuesday.
