HASKELL
Charles Augustine Haskell, who lived at East Windham for more than half a century, was an adopted son of the town. He was the son of Moses M. and Polenah S. (Mclntire) Haskell, and was born in New Gloucester, May 13, 1836. After leaving the district school, where he acquired his education, he learned the trade of horse-shoer which he followed for six years in New Gloucester.
He married, April 14, 1863, Hannah Allen Libby, the youngest daughter of Elias and Elizabeth (Hawkes) Libby of Windham. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Haskell went to live in New Gloucester, where they remained until 1866, when they purchased the farm in Windham from Mrs. Haskell's father and removed there. This farm consisted of about one hundred forty acres, forty acres of which Mr. Haskell placed in a high state of cultivation, and, for many years, successfully engaged in farming and butter-dairying. He has always been held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. He served on the board of selectmen of Windham in the years, 1874-75, and again in 1901-2-3. In 1891, he served as collector of taxes of the town. In 1901, Mr. and Mrs. Haskell sold the farm to their oldest son, but continued to reside there until 1909, when they removed to Portland, where they are now living.
