Extract of letter from H. Leland Haskell to Marion Anderson (Haskell Family Association genealogist) dated July 30, 1991
Born in Sawtelle, California (now West Los Angeles), my family relocated to Naperville, Iinois where my father, Paul Leland Haskell died December 3, 1918. After a brief stay at my maternal grandmother's home in Springfield, Illinois, my mother married Walter Newman Haskell and we relocated to Rock Island, Illinois. I graduated from Rock Island High School in 1931, and in 1932 I joined the 31st Organized Division, U.S. Naval Reserve and entered Augustana College, both in Rock Island. Graduating from Augustana with an A.B. degree in 1936, I was commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve in November 1936.
I married Audrey Elaine Carlson on Saturday, September 30, 1939 in Morrison, Illinois. I was then working for my step-father, Walter Newman Haskell, who was a brother of my grandfather, William Woodwell Haskell. Walter was a Patent Attorney and I worked in his office for ten years as secretary and patent draftsman until my active naval duties began.
Business was a little slack those days and my step-dad was actually supporting two households, his and mine, so just a little more than two months after Audrey and I were married, I heeded a call from the Navy and volunteered for one year's active duty. (That one year stretched to twenty years naval service) I reported on board the U.S.S. COLORADO, a Battleship (BB-45), in Long Beach, California January 6, 1940, and was assigned to the Radio Division of the Communications Department. Five months later, I became the ship's Signal Officer and Signal Division Officer. Incidentally, the COLORADO was the only Battleship of the Pacific Fleet not at Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. We were in dry dock in the Bremerton, Washington Naval Shipyard, across Puget Sound from Seattle.After three and a half years on the COLORADO, I was ordered to the Staff of the Commander, Carrier Division TWENTY-TWO as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to the Admiral. Between the COLORADO and the Carrier Division, I spent thirteen months in the South Pacific not seeing my family the whole time.
Subsequent naval duties included Head of the Seamanship Department, U. S. Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School at the University of Notre Dame; graduate of the Senior Course and on the Staff as an instructor of Strategy and Tactics, and Communications Officer, U.S Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island; 1948 Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. WANTUCK (APD-125) out of San Diego, California and stationed with the U.S. SEVENTH Fleet in Tsingtao, China for seven months with calls to Shanghai and Nanking; Force Communications Officer on the Staff of Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Far East, and Officer in Charge of U.S. Naval Radio Station, Tokyo. My family resided with me in Tokyo for two years. We moved from Tokyo to Boston where I was ordered to the Staff of Headquarters, FIRST Naval District as District Communications Officer and Commanding Officer, U.S. Radio Station, Boston; Commanding Officer, U.S.S. FRED T. BERRY (DDE-858) home port, Newport, Rhode Island, serving on cruises of two and a half months and six months with the U.S. SIXTH Fleet in the Mediterranean with stops in Portugal, Gibraltar, Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Sicily, Greece, Turkey and Algeria; U.S. Naval War College, Academics Department searching for outstanding professors to fill five professorial chairs for one year's duration; Operations Officer for the Naval Command College of the Naval War College, a one year class for Senior Foreign Naval Officers; and finally back to the Staff of the Commandant, FIRST Naval District from which I finally retired on May 1, 1960.
Since 1947 when we purchased a home in Coronado, California, we have owned homes in Waltham, Massachusetts, Newport, Rhode Island, South Braintree and Melrose, Massachusetts, Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, Fredericksburg and Locust Grove, Virginia, and presently in Pataskala Ohio, just East of Columbus. We also resided in rentals in Long Beach, San Diego and San Francisco, South Bend, Indiana, Portsmouth, Rhode Island and Springfield, PA. Also, Seattle and Bremerton, Washington.
My Navy travels in the Pacific took me to Eniwetok, Guam, Okinawa, Korea and the Fiji and New Hebrides Islands as well as New Caledonia, and in the Atlantic to Bermuda, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Kingston, Jamaica, Cap Haitien, Haiti, Cape Verde Island, Portugal, and Argentia, Newfoundland.
