Larry Thurlow, 95, Niantic, formerly St. Joseph, passed away May 11, 2015.
Larry was born Nov. 23, 1919, in Buffalo, N.Y., and grew up in New London and Niantic, Conn.
He graduated class valedictorian from Chapman Tech High School in 1937. He won the Rensselaer Medal for Math and Science, as well as a Diplomatic Scholarship to Tufts University. Following high school, he ran for Connecticut State Senator for the Socialist Party in the twentieth district.
As a Staff Sergeant in the US Army Air Force (WWII), he served as a weatherman in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, Liberal, Kan., and St. Joseph, where he met his wife, Marian Rix.
Larry was owner of Sewall Paint Stores until he became Area Supervisor for the Mo. Dept. of Revenue.
Larry was a mason, St. Joseph Lodge #269, and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a member of the Moila Temple Legion of Honor, the High Twelve Club No. 49, and the American Legion. He served at various times on the Democratic State Club of Missouri, the Little United Nations Club, the English Speaking Union, the Missouri Writers Guild, the Buchanan County Democrats and the Governors Advisory Council on Aging. He also participated in many Elderhostel Education Travel opportunities.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Lawrence Thurlow and Edith Thurlow Bond; his wife, Marian Rix Thurlow; his brothers, Kenneth Thurlow, William Thurlow, and Fred Bond Jr.; and his sister, Elizabeth Thurlow Whitehead.
Larry is survived by: his daughter, Anne Thurlow; his brother, Winthrop Thurlow; dozens of nieces and nephews; a grand-dog; and his second wife, Janet Mayfield.
Larrys brilliance, intellectual acuity, impressive memory, wit, humor and enormous laugh will be remembered by all who knew him.
