Duane Schultz, 89, life-long Milan resident and local auto dealer, passed away unexpectedly at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital on July 7, with his sons by his side.
Born March 19, 1927 he was the only child of Maurine and Leland Schultz of Milan. He was a 1945 graduate of Milan High School and on his 18th birthday, enlisted in the Navy where he served in the South Pacific as World War II ended.
Following his naval discharge, he attended Ferris Institute in Big Rapids until his father's health brought him back to Milan and the family business, Schultz Motors of Milan. He successfully operated the dealership, consistently winning the highest level of corporate awards for customer satisfaction. Respected by his peers, he served as Regional President of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana on the National President's Council of the Dodge Dealer Advertising Association. After his retirement, he passed the business to a third generation, his sons Todd and Tyler.
Duane served Milan as a volunteer firefighter, was elected to the village and city councils, and the Milan Board of Education. He was also a long time Rotarian. Always friendly, Duane loved people and developed lasting friendships with many of his customers.
Survivors include his wife, Isabelle, sons Todd (Patricia) and Tyler, grandchildren Scott (Lindsay) Schultz and Caitlin (Ryan) Ross, and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Ruth Ann.
