CAPE ELIZABETH - Radcliffe G. Mitchell, Jr., 79, passed away on Feb. 19, 2015, at Gosnell House in Scarborough, with his loving family by his side. Radcliffe was born in Auburn, on July 27, 1935, to Shirley and Radcliffe Mitchell, Sr.
He grew up in Auburn and attended Edward Little High School, 1953, Hebron Academy, 1954, and Norwich University, 1958. During his early years, he was a registered Maine Guide, guiding canoe trips in Northern Maine. Radcliffe entered the army upon graduation from college, in 1958, and retired a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve in 1982. During this period, he had assignments in Fort Knox, Ky., Fort Stewart, Ga., Germany, Bowdoin College, Fort Lewis, Wash., and two tours in Vietnam. He had various assignments as tank platoon and company commander, instructor, student at the command and general staff college, and civil defense worker for Cumberland County. He received two Bronze Star Medals, Meritorious Service Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, Korean Honor Medal First Class, Order of Military Merit, Staff Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal with 11 campaigns.
His civilian jobs included heavy duty parts Sales Manager, case worker for Motus, Inc., working with offender's re-entry into society, and caseworker at Jordan House, with homeless males in recovery from substance abuse. Radcliffe was a member of the Cape Elizabeth Lions Club, Reserve Officers ASSN, Military Officers Association of America, VFW Post 432, and Sons of the American Revolution.
He was predeceased by his parents; and his sister, Dawn Ellen.
Survivors include: his wife, Frances I. Mitchell; children, Radcliffe G. Mitchell III of Florida, John Bryant Mitchell and wife Diane of W. Yarmouth, Mass.; grandchildren, Radcliffe G. Mitchell IV, Nicholas A. Mitchell, both of Bangor; step-grandchildren, Cheryl DeGeorge, Amy Cook and Heather Cook; and three step-great-grandchildren.
