  Rutland Herald (VT) July 18, 2012 MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Merle W. "Chick" Ackert Jr., 80, died June 20, 2012, at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. He was born Oct. 5, 1931, in Danby, Vt., the son of Merle "Zib" Ackert and Leda Mae (Parmenter) Livingston, and was raised in Mount Tabor, Danby and Chittenden, Vt. A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, he served with the U.S. Army and later, with the U.S. Marine Corps. Prior to retirement, Mr. Ackert managed oil terminals in Portland for 31 years, and later was a delivery driver for Hoffman Auto in Hartford. He was a member of the Durham Rod & Gun Club, VFW Post 583 in Middletown, American Legion Post 31 in Rutland, Vt., and Masonic Lodge #76 in Danby, Vt., and served on various town of Durham boards and as deacon of the United Churches of Durham. Survivors include a daughter, Jackie Downes of Vero Beach, Fla.; a brother, Tom Ackert of Middletown; stepsons, Dale Guerton of Florida, James and William Russo, both of Portland; stepdaughters, Sandra Brown of North Carolina and Kathy Gates of Florida; former wife, Helen (Aubin) Ackert of Cromwell; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Aurlie Jan (Alden) Ackert; and a son, Merle "Dolph" Ackert III.
