Henry Francis Douglass, age 80, of Eastham, passed away Sept. 26, 2011, at the Epoch Senior Healthcare of Harwich after a long struggle against Parkinson's disease.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Cora (Pharmakis) Douglass of Eastham. He was the loving father to the late Steven Douglass, and Diana (Douglass) Creed of Thompson, Conn.; and grandfather to John Creed IV, age 19, of Thompson, Conn., and Jenna Creed, age 17, of Ellington, Conn. He is survived by a sister, Judy Barton of New Port Richey, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Ernest Douglass, and sister Barbara Grant.
Henry was born on May 31, 1931, in Attleboro, the son of Harold E. and Anna W. (Sayer) Douglass. He graduated from Attleboro High School in 1949 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War (1951-1954); he was stationed in Germany and attained the rank of staff sergeant.
He was employed by Western Union for 35 years, serving as manager of credit and collections for New England in the Boston office. He retired in 1988.
Henry raised his family on Agricultural Avenue in Rehoboth, and was active in town government, serving for several years as chairman of the town's finance committee.
An avid fisherman, horseman, gardener and hunter (with his beloved beagle Lady), Henry was known for his Scottish practicality, his wry sense of humor and his love of the outdoors. He leaves many friends and extended family members.
