MARBLEHEAD - Former town official, William S. 'Tap' Haines, 70, of 8 Spring St., died Wednesday evening at the Mary A. Alley Hospital after a short illness.
He was the husband of Shirley (Hinch) Haines. Born in Marblehead, son of the late John M. and Lydia (Shepard) Haines, he has been a lifelong resident of Marblehead.
He was a graduate of Marblehead High School, Class of 1923, and a graduate of Lynn Burdett College, Class of 1925.
Mr. Haines was elected Town Auditor in 1925 and 1926. He was a member of the Public Welfare Board for 30 years and was its chairman for 25 years. He was office manager of the John S. Martin Co. of Marblehead, having been in their employ since 1927.
He was a former president of the Marblehead Boosters Club and a former noble grand of Atlantic Lodge IOOF.
He was the original player-agent for the Marblehead Little League.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 1 son, William "Esso" Haines and a granddaughter, Judith Ann Haines, both of Marblehead; and several nieces and nephews.
