  Local newspaper WATERFORD Theodore (Ted) Hartley Howe, 84, of Waterford died Monday evening, June 15, 1998, at his home in Waterford after a period of failing health. He was born in Waterford on April 5, 1914, the son of Harold and Mildred Heath Howe. During WWII Ted was a first class machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, building a home and living in the Kittery area. He married the former Alice Brown on May 26, 1934 and they were married for over 64 years and Alice died on February 3, 1996. In 1945, they moved back to Waterford where they spent the rest of their lives raising two children. Mr. Howe owned and operated a saw mill and lumber business. His dedication to life was exemplified by his dedication to his community, acting as chairman of the school board, selectman of Waterford, and especially serving as Chief of Police. He also served as an Oxford County Deputy Sheriff and as a court officer in Superior Court. After semi-retirement, he worked for Paul Sanborn at Sanborn Machine, as a machinist. He Was a Past Master of Mt. Tirem Lodge #132 AF&AM and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mr. Howe enjoyed hunting, brook fishing, caring for his land and eating lobster. He is survived by his dear mother Mildred Howe who is 101; one son, Robert and his wife, June, of Spanaway, WA; one daughter, Cynthia and her husband, Paul, Littlefield of Rochester, NH; two sisters, June Starbird of Waterford, and Jean Grover of East Bethel; one brother Paul (Bill) Howe of Norway, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren several nieces and nephews and many friends.
