Coburn Haskell, known fondly to his family and friends as Cobe, passed away peacefully in his home on February 1, 2012.
Cobe was born in Tucson, Arizona December 18, 1924, the first of three sons born to Melville H. Haskell, Sr., and Katherine (Adams) Haskell. He spent the first 10 years of his life on his parents' Rincon Ranch outside Tucson before moving to Pasadena, California where he spent the remainder of his youth.
He graduated from Polytechnic School in Pasadena in 1940 and then Catalina Island School for Boys in 1943. Upon graduation from Catalina Island School and at the age of 18, Cobe enlisted in the Naval Seabees to help in the war effort of WWII. He was stationed on Guam in the Pacific for most of the time and then on Okinawa just prior to and after the end of the war. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy in March 1946.
Returning to California after the war, Cobe enrolled at UC Davis earning a degree in Animal Husbandry to further his desire of being a cattle rancher. In the winter of 1949 he established the Haskell Stock Farm on property between Marysville and Wheatland. He had scouted out the area while attending UC Davis and knew this would be an excellent location because of the two rivers flowing through the area.
In 1970 Cobe sold his ranches and devoted his working hours to managing his investments. He was an expert sailor and avid sportsman, loving fly fishing and hunting, traveling throughout the United States and many countries to pursue those sports.
He served on the Board of Directors of Rideout Memorial Hospital (1955-1980) and was Chairman of the Board (1965-1967), was a member of the Marysville Rotary Club from 1957 to the present and a recipient of their Paul Harris award. Cobe served on the Cal Aggie Foundation Board at UC Davis (1985-1991), and was President of the Haskell Fund in Cleveland, Ohio (1984-2003). Over the years he served on the following local Boards: Boy Scouts of America, United Way, Yuba College LVN & RN program. In October 1992 he was the recipient of the Rideout Award.
Philanthropy was a life-long interest of Cobe. He was particularly concerned with medical and educational advancement. Fremont-Rideout Foundation and the Yuba College LVN & RN program were two of his favorite charities.
Cobe is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Geraldine "Gerry" Haskell, by his sons Alexander H. Haskell and Eric T. (Danielle) Haskell, by his stepsons Patrick (Charmagne) Wood, Jeffrey A. Mondon (Arnaldo Moreno) and Gregory J. (Janette) Mondon, by seven grandchildren, seven step-granchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Schuyler A. Haskell and Mark Haskell, a sister Mary Haskell Walker, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a younger brother, Melville H Haskell, Jr.
