FAIRFIELD -- Stanley E. Brackett, 82, formerly of Burnham, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at his daughter's home in Fairfield. Stanley was born on Jan. 17, 1927, in Winslow, the son of Roy P. Brackett and Beatrice F. (Farris) Brackett.
He joined the Navy before completing high school, at age 17, in 1944, serving at the end of World War II, and later received his general educational development certificate. After returning home from his service, Stanley returned to work at the Harris Baking Co., where he met his wife, Wyona A. (Barnes) Brackett.
Stan and Wyona were married on Stan's birthday in 1947, a union lasting more than 62 years. They were inseparable, and one could say he passed away of a broken heart, she having predeceased him on June 17, 2009.
Stanley was the father of three children: son Terry Brackett and his wife, Cheryl, of Gardiner; daughter Rhonda Doody and her husband, Jim, of Fairfield; and son Todd Brackett and his wife, Martha, of Nobleboro.
Stanley's entire life was dedicated to his family and friends. He worked hard to ensure that his family was able to enjoy life to its fullest and so he could enjoy life with all those who knew him. Stanley's passion was always those around him. He so enjoyed spending time with friends and family at gatherings at home or at camp. Not a week went by when Stanley wasn't involved in something with others, and he would have it no other way. As a husband, father, and friend, there were none finer than Stanley Brackett. Stanley worked for the Harris Baking Co., for 17 years in total, beginning before he joined the Navy; then for many years for the Colonial Supply Co. in Portland, selling plumbing and heating supplies all over Maine. In 1970 Stanley moved to Randolph and went to work for R.E. McGee Oil, Inc., a company he later purchased. He retired with his wife in 1990 and moved to their cottage on Unity Pond in Burnham. He was a member of the Lions Club in both Gardiner and Clinton and a former King Lion at the Gardiner club. He was also a member of the American Legion Post in Unity. Stanley loved to fish and golf, passions he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He had four holes-in-one in his lifetime. Stan enjoyed bowling, dancing, and travel, with a special love for Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Stanley is survived by his brother, Roy Brackett and his wife, Ruth, of North Vassalboro; his three children, Terry, Rhonda and Todd; grandchildren Josh and Tyson Doody, Tyler and Maureen Brackett, Mike and Matt Mason, Scott, Jacob, and McKayla Brackett; as well as six great-grandchildren, many nephews, and a niece.
