BLUE HILL, ME Carol A. (Kennison) Whitney, 87, of Blue Hill, ME, formerly of Northborough and Westborough MA, died Monday (March 22, 2010) in Blue Hill. Her husband of 64 years, A. Gordon Whitney, died in 2006.
Mrs. Whitney was born March 6, 1923, in Worcester, daughter of Paul H. and Elizabeth (Williston) Kennison.
She is survived by her children, Craig R. Whitney and his wife, Heidi, of Brooklyn, NY; Jane C. Whitney and her husband Richard Hero of Brooklin, ME; Dana P. Whitney and his wife, Gail, of Clinton, CT; a dear nephew, Michael C. Kennison, and his wife, Nancy, of Newburyport; a brother, Robert C. Kennison, of Plymouth; five beloved grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Before moving to Westborough in 1932, Mrs. Whitney lived in Worcester, Simsbury CT, and Newton. She graduated from Westborough High School in 1941. She was Vice President of her class for 4 years and its salutatorian. She attended Chamberlain School in Boston before her marriage in 1942 to her high school sweetheart.
Mrs. Whitney was a devoted homemaker, wife, and mother, these being her primary professions. She also worked in Westborough for Dorothy Hickox Real Estate, and at the Public Library and the Post Office. She and her husband were members of the Westborough Unitarian-Universalist Church.
A prodigious reader all her life, she wrote "Carol's Column" for the Westborough Chronotype in the 1950s and "Paws & Reflect" for the Chronotype in the 1970s, and published stories and articles in the Worcester Telegram's "Feature Parade" and in the Christian Science Monitor. She was an accomplished artist, specializing in oil paintings; a jazz aficionado from a very early age; a lover of cats, taking in many strays; and she enjoyed gardening all her life.
