ROTTERDAM -- Robert M. McGee Sr., 73, of Roberta Road died Saturday in St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady.
Mr. McGee was born in Schenectady. He was reared and educated in Berlin, N.H.
Mr. McGee was an Army veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Monterey in the South Pacific, Australia, New Guinea, the East Indies and the southern Philippines. He was awarded many medals.
Mr. McGee moved back to Schenectady after the war, and he was employed with the General Electric Co., working in the large motor department for 41 years. He retired as a group leader.
For 26 years, Mr. McGee owned Rotterdam Electric. He installed two-way radio and police emergency equipment for most of the police cars in Schenectady County.
Mr. McGee was a Democratic committeeman for the 18th District. He served as president of the Democratic Party of Rotterdam.
Mr. McGee was a member and committee member of the AFL-CIO 301. He was a member of GE Quarter-Century Club.
He was a member, fire chief and fire commissioner of the Carman Fire Department, and was awarded honorary life membership. Mr. McGee was fire coordinator in Rotterdam, and was founder, charter member and first chairman of the Rotterdam Fire Chief Association. He headed the Fire Training Center in Rotterdam, and he was a member of the White Eagle Volunteer Ambulance Squad for many years before retiring as an honorary member.
Mr. McGee was an international representative of the Boy Scouts Troop 32.
He was a member, head usher and deacon of New Life Ministries, for which he was in charge of the annual ushers' congregational picnics.
Mr. McGee resided on Roberta Road since 1947.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth C. McGee; a son, Robert M. McGee Jr. of Rotterdam; three daughters, Diane N. DesBois of Schenectady, Sheila R. McGee of Aurora Grande, Calif., and Janice Rice of Glenville; a brother, Everett A. McGee of Avon, Mass.; a sister, Sandy Binten of Brockton, Mass.; his former wife, Eleanor A. McGee; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
