  Sunday Republican (Springfield, MA) September 25, 2011 STONINGTON, ME - Melvin F. Haskell, 88, of Stonington, Maine, and formerly of East Longmeadow, MA, passed away on September 21, 2011 at a Portland Healthcare Facility. Melvin was born in Stonington on December 5, 1922, the son of the late Elroy and Christine (Terry) Haskell. Following his education, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country aboard the U.S.S. Texas during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1946, with the rank of Gunner's Mate 1st Class. Following his discharge, he returned to East Longmeadow, MA and began work at Monsanto Chemical Company, where he worked as a Foreman for 31 years. Following his retirement, he returned home to Stonington, where he enjoyed trapping lobster for many years. Melvin was a Noble of the Melha Shrine Center in Springfield, MA. He was also a Mason, belonging to the Mariner Lodge in Stonington, ME, and a charter member of the Shawmut Lodge in Indian Orchard, MA. Melvin leaves his beloved wife of 62 years, Barbara M. (Sorel) Haskell of Stonington, formerly of East Longmeadow, MA. Melvin also leaves his children: Susan Graham and husband, Kevin of Windham, Sandra Lachtara and husband, Edwin of Windham, Vivian Gillison and husband, Larry of Anderson, South Carolina, and Donald Haskell and wife, Ann of East Longmeadow, MA; 11 grandchildren: Carrie Kinney, Melodie LaRue, Mistie Merced, Derek McGuire, April Lachtara, Lee Lachtara, Steven Lachtara, Thomas Smith, Cherish Bobbitt, Donna Haskell, and Carol Haskell; his 15 great-grandchildren; and three nieces.
