Norman L. Currier, 89. of 160 Perkins Road, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at the Arbors of Bedford. He was born Nov. 9,1913, in Haverhill, Mass., the son of the late J. Varnum and Mabel G. (Lunt) Currier and was a longtime resident of Rye.
He attended Crowell Grammar School in the Riverside section of Haverhill and was a 1931 graduate of Haverhill High School. He attended Northeastern University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology-in Boston.
Mr. Currier was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a civil assistant in the shop superintendent's office from 1940 until 1946, when he transferred to the management planning and review office as a management analyst. He was made supervisor of that office in 1959 and retired in 1972 after 32 years of service. He had previously been a machinist for the Lacene Co., Lawrence, Mass., from 1936 until 1940.
He was active with the former Bethany Church, Rye Center, now Rye Congregational Church, where he taught Sunday school for several years. He served on the Rye Conservation Committee and was involved with the Boy Scouts. He was a life member of the Charles C. Dame Lodge AF & AM in Georgetown, Mass., and was a member of tile Active Retirement Association Program in Durham.
As a teenager he and his cousin built a canoe named the "Mini ha-ha" and they enjoyed riding the Merrimack River from Haverhill to Newburyport, Mass. many times. He enjoyed traveling, swimming, hiking and playing the piano.
He is survived by one son and one daughter; three stepdaughters. He was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis K. (Conley) Currier, his wife of 47 years who died in 1984; his second wife, Lorraine (Henderson) Cameron Currier, his wife of 17 years, who died in February; and one brother, Arthur Currier.
