ARTHUR H. DAMON JR., 75, of 140 Ruggles Ave., a retired Navy captain, died Wednesday at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Joan Kathryn (Hamilton) Damon.
He was born in Scituate, Mass., a son of the late Arthur H. and Margery (Spicer) Damon. He was formerly of Duxbury, Mass.
Captain Damon attended Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and entered the Navy in July 1940. He was commissioned in 1941. He later graduated from Duke University in the class of 1948.
He was communications officer on the Laffey, which was sunk at Guadalcanal Nov. 13, 1942. After other wartime shipboard assignments, he was an aide and flag secretary for the commander, Destroyer Flotilla Six, Atlantic Fleet, from January 1946 to August 1947. In 1949, he became the commanding officer of the Maloy. Among his other assignments were stints as commandr of the Fleet Training Group, the Training Plans Office for the Fleet Training Group in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and chief of staff of the First Naval District in Boston. He also attended and taught at the Naval War College. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Cuban Order of Naval Merit Award. He was an engineer for Raytheon Corp. for 10 years, retiring in 1975.
He was a member of the 100 Club of Rhode Island, the First Presbyterian Church of Newport and its Men's Club.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, William L. Sandberg of Riverside, Conn.; a daughter, Christine H. Connor of Rye, N.Y.; a brother, Richard Damon of Brewster, Mass.; a sister, Priscella Damon Reed of Needham, Mass., and four grandchildren.
