Hugh Montgomery Jr., 87, died unexpectedly at his home Friday.
He was born in Cambridge, Mass., a son of Hugh and Helen Bonney Montgomery. He graduated from the Belmont School in Belmont, Mass., Harvard College and Columbia University School of Library Science.
Mr. Montgomery was the librarian at the Littnaur School at Harvard, the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., University of Southeastern Massachusetts and Wentworth Institute in Boston.
He served for years in the field of artillery in the Pacific theater during World War II.
On Sept. 28, 1946, he married Elizabeth Beal at the Congregational Church in Phillips. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1996.
A love for the country drew the Montgomerys to retire to Phillips in 1976.
Mr. Montgomery was a trustee of the Phillips Historical Society and curator of the Railroad Room at the Historical House.
He was a member of the Congregational Church, the board of trustees and served as moderator of the Church and used his leadership by serving on other church committees.
He was project manager of the restoration of the Community House, seeing to the accuracy of period details and meeting modern specifications. He trained librarians and volunteers and served as director of operations of the library.
Mr. Montgomery was chair of the Whittemore Building Restoration Committee for the new home of the Phillips Public Library and chairman of the board of appeals.
He was a member of the Franklin County Democratic Committee. He also held a seat on the Franklin County Personnel Board from 1978 to 1980 and was a former member of both the Dump Study Committee and the Solid Waste Committee.
Because of their interest in conservation and environmental issues, both Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery were instrumental in the formation of the Sandy River Land Trust to act in the public interest to protect key scenic areas, farm lands and critical habitats along Sandy River.
Surviving is his wife of Phillips.
