The funeral service for Jean Marthella Layman, of Perham and formerly of New York Mills and Deer Creek, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 6, at Schuller Family Funeral Home's Johnson-Schuller Chapel in Wadena with Rev. Carol "Coke" Smith presiding. Visitation will be held at the Chapel on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
Jean, age 91, passed away with family at her side on Thursday, August 1, 2019, at the Hadley House in Perham MN Under the gentle care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Jean was born to John C. and Cecil (Sabourin) Glass on June 16, 1928, in Minneapolis, MN. An only child, she graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1946 and after high school worked as a bookkeeper at the IDS Building downtown.
Jean was united in marriage with William Layman on August 20, 1949 in Minneapolis, MN. In 1950, they moved to Deer Creek, MN when Bill began work at the Deer Creek School and she worked lovingly raising her family. Jean loved fishing, knitting, hunting, embroidery, crossword puzzles, canning and baking the worlds BEST apple pie! She was also known among her family as the luckiest cribbage player.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband William on April 27, 1990; children Gerald "Jerry" in 2011 and Patricia "Patty" Meyer in 2014; son-in-law Brad Salquist in 2012; great-granddaughter Madalynn Layman; and her parents John and Cecil Glass.
Surviving Jean are her daughters Kathleen (Peter) Zavadil of Frazee MN, and Nancy Salquist of West Fargo ND; sons Bill Layman of New York Mills MN, Tom (Jean) Layman of Ottertail MN, and Bob (Sue) Layman of Eau Claire WI; son-in-law Mike Meyer of Perham; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; as well as her countless friends.
