Gerald R. "Jerry" Layman, 56, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, August 15, 2011 at Lakeland Hospice House in Fergus Falls.
Jerry was born the son of William and Jean (Glass) Layman on November 28, 1954 in Wadena. He was raised and educated in Deer Creek, graduating from high school in 1972. Jerry began working for BNSF Railroad shortly after high school. He was united in marriage to Jean Gennaro on Aug. 3, 1985 in Coon Rapids, Minn. They made their home in New York Mills, while Jerry continued to work for the railroad as a foreman/welder until 1987. They later moved to Detroit Lakes, where Jerry was the owner of Jerry's Optical for many years.
Jerry was an avid sportsman, which included fishing, hunting and golf. He also enjoyed flying his airplane throughout the lakes area and playing his guitar.
Surviving Jerry are his daughter, Angela Layman, son, Micky Layman and granddaughter, Malia Layman, all of Coon Rapids; mother, Jean Layman, New York Mills; three sisters, Kathleen (Peter) Zavadil, Perham, Nancy (Brad) Salquist, West Fargo and Patty (Mike) Meyer, Perham; three brothers, Bill (Joy Lapos) Layman, New York Mills, Tom (Jean) Layman, Sabin and Bob (Sue) Layman, Eau Claire, Wis.; numerous nieces, nephews and good friends.
Preceding Jerry in death were his grandparents and his father, William.
