• Notes

  Merrill E. Haskell (1834-1885) was born in Hartland, Maine, as was Elizabeth Lancey Haskell (1843-1901). They married in either 1860 or 1861 and first lived in Paris, Maine. Within a few years the couple moved to Portland where Merrill was a partner in a shoe factory on Middle Street. The company name changed over the years - Stevens, Lord, Haskell & Co. to Lord, Haskell & Co. - but the product remained moccasins. The couple had one son, Wilmot S., born in 1863. The three foot-stones - Father, Mother, Baby - and "Baby" inscribed on the obelisk's right side, however, suggest Merrill and Elizabeth, also known as Billie, had another child. Merrill's death certificate states he died in Orange, New Jersey, where he'd been living for six months. Elizabeth died in Boston, most likely at the home of Wilmot and his wife Marion. - Provided by Friends of Evergreen
