DALLAS - Robert Bush Smither Jr., was born on April 19, 1937, in Huntsville, Texas, and died on July 15, 1997, in Dallas, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Jackson Smither; his son, Robert Bush Smither III of Dalhart; his daughter, Sallie Smither Grotty and son-in-law, Mark Grotty of Dallas; his son, John Jackson Smither and daughter-in-law Patricia Abel Smither of Houston; his daughter, Mary Kate Smither of Dallas; his granddaughter, Kate Gaston Grotty of Dallas; his brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Stephanie Smither of Houston, and Wilbur and Martha Smither of Dallas; his aunts Mary Virginia Smither of Huntsville and Norma Henderson of Houston; and his wife's family Sallie Bell and Nowell Loop and Gertrude Gaston of Dallas.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Ruth Smither of Huntsville.
Bob was proud of his Huntsville heritage, where he was raised and his family has lived for generations. He attended the Citadel Military College in Charleston, South Carolina, and received bis BA. degree from The University of Texas at Austin and a commission in the Army. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Following his graduation he served as a military police officer in the army. He began a career in banking at First National Bank in Dallas and received a diploma from the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University. In 1968 he and his family moved to Galveston, Texas, where he was associated with University National Bank, which he served as president and then as a principal owner until 1992. In Galveston, Bob served as president of the Trinity Episcopal School Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Galveston Artillery Club, the Bob Smith Yacht Club, the Rotary Club and Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served as. Treasurer of the Vestry. In 1992, Bob and his family returned to Dallas, where he was a member of the Park City Club and St. Christopher's Episcopal Church.
