HENRY HOUSTON HAWLEY died Thursday, August 8, 2019 at his home in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
A Dallas native and graduate of Highland Park High School, Mr. Hawley earned degrees from Stanford University, The University of Delaware and Harvard University. He served as a Winterthur Fellow for two years. Mr. Hawley joined the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1960. He was a renowned scholar and researcher who authored over 70 works. During his 42 year involvement with the Decorative Arts Department, he acquired significant pieces from the museum's collection and curated renowned exhibitions. Holding the title of Curator of Baroque and later Decorative Arts and Sculpture, he led the department to a position of worldwide eminence.
Mr. Hawley is survived by his partner of 56 years, George Vassos; his sister, Florine Hawley Moore (Judge William R. Moore, Jr.); his brother, John Richard Hawley (Marcia Merritt Hawley); his sister Sarah Hawley Dunning (Thomas Mayborn Dunning); and eight nieces and nephews and their families.
