Ellen Louise Sherwood Barnes, 96 died Saturday, January 9th surrounded by family and friends.
She was born in Parkersburg on March 11, 1919 to Lillian Tidd and Reginald Floyd Sherwood.
A 1937 graduate of Parkersburg High School, she was a member of the tennis and basketball teams and served as a class officer.
Ellen married Tom L. Barnes in 1942 and the two spent the next three years in the oil fields in Caracas, Venezuela.
They returned to Parkersburg in 1945 and began raising their family of six. She was the secretary/bookkeeper for her husband's sales business, volunteered with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and was a consummate bridge player. The couple spent many weekends displaying their smooth dance moves as members of two local Dance Clubs.
A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, Ellen served in various capacities including President of the Women's Association, Sunday School class President and circle leader. She was an active member of the Women's Elks.
Her husband preceded her in death in 2002. She is survived by her six children; John (Candy), Michael (Brenda), Vicki, Jean, Jane (Mike McCauley) and Jeffrey (Karen); Seven grandchildren, two step grandchildren, two great grandsons, two step great grandsons and her dog Molly.
