Louis E. Horton, Jr. "Louie"Aug. 28, 1938 - June 3, 2006
Louis E. "Louie" Horton passed away suddenly in Bishop, California on his way home to Elko, Nevada. He was born and raised in Bakersfield. His parents were Louis E., Sr. and Florence Horton.
He graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1957 where he was very active in the BHS Chapter of FFA serving as President. He was also active in Band and on the Swimming Team. In 1959 he married his high school sweetheart, Alice Walters. He graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a Masters Degree in Agricultural Education. After teaching Ag two years in California, Louie and his family moved to Elko, Nevada where he was the Ag Teacher and FFA Advisor until 1979 when he accepted a teaching position at Great Basin Community College. He served as an instructor and advisor to Ag students until 1991 when he accepted the position of Coordinator for Prison Education Programs. In September 1998 Louie retired but continued his many activities in Kiwanis, Toastmasters and other community endeavors. In 1998, though retired, he was Nevada State FFA Advisor, for two years. He continued his love of helping students develop their leadership skills by working with FFA members in Elko up to the time of his death. He particularly enjoyed sharing the skills he learned in Toastmasters to students and was teaching such a class at Great Basin Community College at the time of his death.
Louie was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jeannie and wife, Alice in 2002.
He is survived by two daughters, Lori, Sparks, Nevada, a teacher and Kelly, Indianapolis, Indiana is in charge of Leadership Development at the National FFA Headquarters in Indianapolis; his sister, Ruth Donati, Santa Margarita and several nieces and nephews survive.
