  Desmond served as a Private First Class, 329th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II. He resided in Knox County, Maine prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on October 14, 1943 in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Married.
