- The following obituary was published in the Baltimore Sun:
"Marion S. Anderson, homemaker, avid genealogist, and long-time resident of Timonium, died of complications from emphysema February 15th at Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Towson. She was 76.
Born Marion Smith in Shanghai, China, in 1928, she grew up in Bloomfield and Glen Ridge, New Jersey, attending Bloomfield High School and later, the St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1949. She was married to Denton C. Anderson in 1952 and went on to work as a public health nurse in Somerville and Montclair, New Jersey, from 1952-1955 and in Harford county, Maryland, 1955-1956.
Mrs. Anderson moved with her family to the Baltimore area in 1962 and settled in Timonium in 1964. There she became an enthusiastic student of local history, and
in the mid-Seventies researched and co-authored The Limestone Valley, a history of Lutherville-Timonium, published in 1976 as part of the local commemoration of the
U.S. Bicentennial. That year she was honored as an Outstanding Member of the Valley Womans Club.
Among those who saw the value inherent in saving and documenting historic buildings, she attended Goucher College as part of the Goucher II program and majored in Historic Preservation, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1988. During this period she researched and documented the tract known historically as Talbots Purchase, before it became a residential development. At the time, the Sun ran an article in which she was praised for her elaborate 101-page study.
Throughout her adult life, Mrs. Anderson was also a devoted genealogist, tireless in her research and generous with her time, helping many who were new to the practice. She took regular trips to Washington, DC, where she examined census data at the Library of Congress, and also spent time in the former Mormon library in Towson gathering information for herself and others. She was a member of the Eells Family Association, the Gerow Family Association, and the Huguenot Historical Society. For over a decade she served as Historian and Secretary for the Haskell Family Association, corresponding with members and researching articles for the Haskell Journal up to the end of her life.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Denton C. Anderson; her son, James of Augusta, Georgia; daughters Deborah, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Susan Gury, of Perry Hall; grandsons Kevin and Bryan Gury; and her sister, Jean Haskell Godfrey, of Riverside, California.
The memorial service is scheduled for Monday February 21st at 11AM at the Lemmon Funeral Home in Timonium. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Lung Association of Maryland toward research into emphysema."
